ARTIST OF THE MONTH - LIANE VAZ

Liane Vaz is a graduate of OCAD University in Toronto, receiving her Bachelor of Design in Material Arts & Design, specializing in Jewellery & Metalsmithing. Her love of making did not start at OCAD, nor has it ended there.

Everybody shows/expresses their creativity in different ways.

Born from a mother who works in sales and a father who is a traffic coordinator in a warehouse - it would be a little difficult to derive where Liane got her creativity from.

But Liane’s mother draws the most beautiful doodles while on the phone. And Liane’s father comes up with the most ridiculous (but witty) “dad jokes” and puns. And they had a child who latched on to the creative part of her personality and pursue it professionally.

It wasn’t until high school that Liane started working with precious metal and traditional jewellery fabrication techniques. Wirework and piercing featured prominently in her work then, and they are two of her favourite techniques now.

In 2009, Liane began the first of four (and some) years at OCAD University in the Jewellery & Metalsmithing program. A quick learner who made many mistakes at first (that only lead to more learning) - Liane worked diligently throughout her years at OCADU, making a name for herself as someone who worked hard, was efficient, and often took a lot onto her plate (full-time school and two to four jobs weren’t enough - she had to go ahead and involve herself in various extracurricular activities as well).

Now, Liane has graduated OCAD University and works in two different jewellery studios. She is a practicing jeweller - selling out of ShopAGO, Room 2046, and her own website. Liane is currently working towards releasing several new collections set at different price ranges - from the more student-friendly and affordable to high-end luxury brand… as well as accepting commissions. She also volunteers her time at the Metal Arts Guild of Canada, and is taking various online courses on Business and Entrepreneurship. Her dream is to open up her own collaborative jewellery studio.

Liane is also a founding member of the amazing and talented group that goes by the name of Mellon Collective.

In the digital world, you can find Liane on Tumblr, Facebook, InstagramPinterest and Twitter. In the physical world, you can find Liane in the studio working either on her own projects or helping someone with theirs. And when she’s not in the studio she’s usually attempting to keep up with various television shows and online lectures, watching Disney movies or documentaries, or planning events and group activities.

AAAAAHH that’s me! I’ve been chosen as Artist of the Month at the place I work! :)
